New Verizon iPhone 4 now available in stores

PHILADELPHIA - February 10, 2011

So what should iPhone newbies do with their old phones? And if you're currently an AT&T subscriber, should you make the switch to Verizon Wireless?

The Verizon iPhone 4 is now being sold at Verizon Wireless stores as well as Apple stores, Best Buys, and some Walmart stores.

Whether you're with AT&T or Verizon Wireless, there are differences when it comes to data plans, text plans, and more, so better to do your homework.

The soon-to-be newest owners of the iPhone 4 lined up early Thursday like at the Verizon Wireless store in Center City.

"I heard it was going to sell today, so I came out here early this morning to grab it," Dynah Konah.

Now that AT&T and Verizon Wireless both support the iPhone, there are some things to consider when choosing carriers.

AT&T allows people to talk on the phone and surf the net or email at the same time. You cannot do that on Verizon.

But as far as pricing, AT&T data plans will cost you $15 per month for 200 megabytes, $25 for 2 gigabytes.

Right now, Verizon offers unlimited data plans for $30, and for an extra $20 a month, you can turn your iPhone 4 into your own personal Wi-fi hot spot, linking up to five devices to the internet wirelessly through your phone.

Both carriers offer unlimited text plans for $20. But for $10, AT&T gives you 1000 texts. Verizon offers just 500, although Verizon also has an option of 250 texts per month for $5.

If you do plan on switching carriers, remember that means you must also get a new iPhone since the phones are different depending on your carrier.

Also, do not cancel your current service provider just yet. Your account needs to remain active until the transaction can be completed for your new purchase.

Also, keep the contacts in your phone for easy transfer.

And if you're a Verizon newbie, what to do with your old phone?

To get the most bank for your buck, sell it on eBay or Craig's list. You can also sell it to Gazelle.com.

And Verizon says you can donate your old phone to one of its stores. Or turn it in for a gift card with the company's trade-in program.
