6ABC Loves the Arts: Orrin Evans

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - February 27, 2011

Influenced by such jazz greats as Thellonius Monk and Horace Silver, Orrin Evans has been praised as the 'clear-cut best' pianist of his generation.

Every Monday night, he and his trio perform a Happy Hour Jazz Jam Session at World Café Live.

Orrin Evans, jazz pianist says he caught the jazz bug when he was just a little boy. "It's just in me because my father was a playwright and he had a studio in our house where he'd write and listen to jazz and my mother was an opera singer but she also did tons of show tunes."

"When I'm around a bunch of musicians, it just feels like home," said Evans.

His style is traditional jazz mixed with R&B and hip hop.

A pianist, composer, arranger and producer for other artists, Evans has 11 records and 2 more coming out this spring, one with his 17 member Captain Black Big Band and one with his trio that will be a tribute to Philadelphia.

Evans says, "Music is love. Music is spiritual. Music is god. It's my escape. Nothing else matters at that point. So it's basically me, the piano and our love affair."

You can catch Orrin Evans and friends Monday nights from 5:30 to 7 at World Café Live. For other performance venues, check out imani dash records.com
