The Philadelphia International Flower Show

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - March 3, 2011

That's true everywhere except Philadelphia this coming week.

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society makes spring appear on command at the Pennsylvania Convention Center during the annual Philadelphia International Flower Show, the world's largest this time of year, and the biggest gate show at the center each year.

It's on from March 6-13. This year's theme is "Springtime in Paris", and it explores all things French. When you enter the exhibit hall, you'll pass under the arch of a four-ton replica of the base of the Eiffel Tower.

It's a 37-foot-high steel structure suspended from the ceiling. Like the real Eiffel Tower, it has a light display once each hour.

Beyond that, you'll see 18-foot-high trees that appear in mid-season splendor, and a sea of French tulips adorning a spreading Parisian-style park. Other parts of the main exhibit include what looks like a century-old carousel with flower-festooned horses, and a stage with regular live entertainment.

Most events are free with your paid admission. Weekdays at 1:00pm, the show will feature guest lecturers on a variety of gardening topics.

At any time you might visit, the society's members and other experts will be on hand to answer just about any garden or green space topic you can imagine.

The show also features a shopping area where you can buy live plants and garden supplies, as well as clothing, artwork, and many other things.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has partnered with a number of French vintners and will offer adults free tastings of some five dozen French wines, including genuine champagne. Concessions will include authentic French cuisine.

The horticultural society has declared this year's show their most spectacular ever.

Director of Design Sam Lemheney told Action News that if you haven't seen the show in a couple of years, or even if you don't like flowers that much, this is still a must-see show.

Tickets are available at the gate, but also online via the show's website, http://www.theflowershow.com where you'll also find detailed information about exhibitors, special attractions and much more.
