Students push for tougher sex assault policies

CARLISLE, Pa. - March 3, 2011

About 250 students staged a sit-in at the school Wednesday as part of a protest in support of more transparent policies on sexual violence. The students want the school to issue alerts when sexual assaults are reported on campus and mandatory expulsion for sex offenders.

The protesters also want the school to punish students who make lewd comments or utter slurs.

Dickinson president William Durden says the school is addressing many of the protesters' concerns but investigation of sex assault allegations is a difficult matter.

The students say Dickinson made some changes following a 2009 protest but failed to address some key issues.
