Underground subway fire impacts SEPTA service

UNIVERSITY CITY - March 15, 2011

SEPTA crews are finishing up repairs at 33rd and Market Streets in the aftermath of the overnight underground fire.

There were concerns that the fire would cause a major disruption to the morning commute, but at this point the Market-Frankford El is running and some trolley routes are operating on a bus service this morning.

Just after 2:00 a.m., a fire broke out inside an underground substation at 33rd and Market Streets on the campus of Drexel University.

A maintenance worker suffered second-degree burns to his arms and was transported to Hahnemann Hospital for treatment.

The fire was brought under control in about an hour, but not before knocking out power to some SEPTA lines between Center City and West Philadelphia. However, power was restored just before 5:00 a.m. to the Market-Frankford El.

The Routes 10 & 36 trolleys will use shuttle buses to transport passengers to 40th and Market Streets for service into Center City. Routes 11, 13, & 34 trolleys are being diverted to 50th and Woodland Avenue where shuttle buses will transport passengers to MFL for service into Center City.
