Badly burned body found in Fairmount Park

PHILADELPHIA - April 3, 2011

The discovery was made shortly after 5:00 p.m. Sunday when a bicyclist on Greenland Drive in Fairmount Park spotted a body down an embankment and flagged down a police officer.

Homicide detectives responded and quickly began scouring the area for any kind of evidence.

They did not find much, and have yet to classify the death as a homicide.

The body, they said, was burned beyond recognition.

"It's badly burned," says Lt. Joseph Galie. "We can't even identify the race or the sex. Homicide is on location and they will be conducting the investigation from here."

Detectives say that they did not notice a tremendous amount of odor at the scene, which would help them determine how long the body may have been there.

They are hoping to have more information once the medical examiner conducts an autopsy.
