Cat allergy vaccine on the way

TORONTO, CANADA; April 11, 2011

Final tests are getting underway on a vaccine to stem those allergies.

Dr. Mark Larche, a researcher at Canada's McMaster University, has created the vaccine from synthetic versions of 7 proteins in the substance that triggers the wheezing & sneezing.

The vaccine has passed the first two phases of testing. Clinical trials are getting underway to find out what dose works best.

The new vaccine would be given by injection several times a year.

In tests so far, it's had very few side effects.

The university, and its commercial partner, Adiga Life Sciences, are already working on similar vaccines for dust mite, ragweed, grass and mold allergies.
