The two vehicle accident happened at about 3:15 p.m.at 11th and Walnut streets.
The accident was first reported as a pedestrian struck, but that turned out not to be the case.
Police say passengers from a car involved in the crash were found out of the vehicle and on the ground.
Three people from one car and two from another were transported to Wilmington Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and Christiana Hospital.
One of the vehicles involved struck a fence.
There are no details on the conditions of those injured.
