Police investigating murder of N. Phila. store owner

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - June 18, 2011

Police are working to find out if the deadly shooting was the result of a robbery or attempted robbery. They are still trying to determine if anything was stolen.

Philadelphia police scoured the area outside Los Ingenitos Grocery at 9th and York Streets looking for clues in the murder of the store's owner.

The shooting happened at around 7:30pm Saturday night at the intersection of 9th and York Street.

Police found one male shot in the chest. Medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene at 7:56pm.

"This is outrageous, it really is," says Ana Jimenez.

Police say the victim, 59 year old Feliz Rodriguez, was working inside the store Saturday evening when someone shot him in the face and chest.

Three men were seen running from the scene moments after the shooting.

The victim's distraught family gathered quickly outside the corner store and waited to hear from investigators.

Family member Ana Jimenez says Rodriguez was a husband, father and grandfather.

"Excellent dad, he lived for his family, basically that's all he did," said Ana Jimenez. "Dedicated, pays his taxes, just like everyone else. There's nothing else more you can say."

People who live in the North Philadelphia community say Los Ingenitos was their grocery store, and Rodriguez was always good to them.

"I'm sick and tired of stuff like this," said Darlene Mims.

Rodriguez's family members say he has owned the store for almost two years, and he was planning to retire soon.
