Lucy the elephant struck by lightning

MARGATE, N.J. - July 6, 2011

Lucy the Elephant looks ok from the outside.

But the Margate monument's alarm system, air conditioning, and credit card machines were all fried in Sunday's lightning strike. Damage is estimated to be anywhere between $50,000 and $100,000.

Elephants never forget, and so Lucy remembers the last she was hit by lightning. A bolt struck her riding carriage back in May of 2007.

Lucy has also survived hurricanes, kerosene fires, and neglect.

She'll celebrate her 130th birthday later this month.
