Police: Car crash led to Pa. car wash explosion

LANCASTER, Pa. - July 7, 2011

The blast at 3:30 a.m. Friday leveled the Engleside Car Wash in West Lampeter Township and damaged several surrounding homes. Damage is estimated at around $1.5 million. No one was hurt.

Township police told the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era on Thursday that a car crash shortly before the explosion likely damaged part of a propane pipe, allowing the area to fill with gas.

Something else must have ultimately ignited the explosion, but Detective Jere Schuler says police may never know what it was.
