Parenting: Independence Day

July 8, 2011

I'm not thrilled, but at this point, they're his ears, it was his money and he is 18, so it's his decision.

Friends tell me the practice is common among college football players, who are following a trend set by the pros. I'm just happy he didn't get a tattoo, like my friends' daughter, who celebrated her high-school graduation by getting Simba from The Lion King permanently inked onto her shoulder.

In many ways, Jason's earrings are a sign of passage for both of us. When he transitioned from diapers to big-boy pants, from a crib to a bed, or from middle school to high school, I was part of the process. We went through the changes together. If he had decided to pierce his ears one year ago, I would've had to give my permission. But all that has changed.

I have to admit, I do feel a bit "left out of the loop." Here's the thing: just because your child turns 18 doesn't mean he's not still you child. You just don't get a say in the process any more… unless they ask for it.

So (sigh!), Jason, enjoy your earrings and your independence. You don't need my approval. But, I'm still your Mom and I reserve the right to ask whether you're disinfecting those holes in your head with alcohol. And always know, if you want my opinion on actions or decisions you're contemplating, even though you're "all grown up," I'll always be here to talk.

And just in case you or your teen are contemplating piercing your ears (and Jason, it wouldn't hurt you to read this over – hint, hint!), here are some tips on doing it safely.
