Police: Cabbie stabbed over $7 fare

CAMDEN - October 13, 2011

Authorities say it was some time after 8:00 p.m. that the Yellow Cab driver picked up a passenger at another location who requested to be taken to the 500 block of Mechanic Street.

When they arrived at the location, the male passenger refused to pay the $7 cab fare and instead stabbed the driver.

Camden resident Donald Wyatt recalled the scene to Action News late Thursday.

"My grandma said that she came out the door and a man was yelling, 'I've been stabbed, I've been stabbed.' She saw the Spanish guy who came out the cab and he was really hysterical grabbing his neck and the neighbor next door gave him a rag to put it around his neck," Wyatt said.

Authorities say the cabbie was stabbed a dozen times and was rushed to Cooper University Hospital in critical condition.

It is but the latest violence to break out in the city of Camden.

So far this week there have been a dozen shootings and four homicides, one of those was on this same block two days ago.

"At I've been on this block 26 years and it's the most I've ever seen. A homicide, now a stabbing? Crazy," Camden resident LeShan Braxton said.

Residents say the block is particularly dark at night because the drug dealers shot out some of the streetlights to conduct their business.

With police trying to keep up with all the violence, morale is low in the wake of recent layoffs and plans for the city to move towards a regional Camden County police force.

Meanwhile, the cab driver he is expected to survive and authorities are hoping to speak with him on Friday.

Police say they may have surveillance video of the assailant in the stabbing taken by a video camera outside a state owned building.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
