Two crashes cause traffic on Pa. Turnpike

UPPER MERION, Pa. - November 12, 2011

A tractor trailer smashed into the back of a disabled car at about 3:40 this morning on the westbound lanes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

It happened near the Gulph Mill exit in Upper Merion, Montgomery County.

The accident injured two people.

Due to the seriousness of their injuries, two medivac helicopters were called to the scene.

Both people were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Turnpike officials shutdown the eastbound side to make way for the helicopters.

That's when a tractor trailer on that side of the highway slammed into the back of a turnpike truck.

The impact sent the tractor trailer down an embankment.

All lanes east and westbound are open.
