Police evict Occupy Allentown protesters

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - December 16, 2011

Allentown police notified the protesters around midnight Friday they had to leave the encampment. About two hours later officers began tearing down the structures. No arrests were made.

Assistant Police Chief Joe Hanna said the structures were in violation of city ordinances.

Protester Elijah LoPointo told The Morning Call of Allentown that police promised to return personal items but equipment and materials were tossed in a dump truck.

Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski said in a statement he supports some of movement's positions but had to balance the groups free speech rights with public safety.
