The crash happened in the northbound lanes by Exit 31 around 5:00 a.m.
Police say the victim, a 52-year-old man, pulled his car over onto the center median for an unknown reason and got out of the vehicle.
That's when he was hit by another car, driven by a 21-year-old man.
The 52-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene. Police are not releasing his name pending notification of family.
There was no word on any injuries to the 21-year-old.
No charges have been filed as this investigation continues.
Two lanes of I-295 NB were closed for hours after the crash, with the highway reopening around 9:17 a.m.
