Search for woman's attacker in Burlington Co., NJ

CHESTERFIELD, N.J. - February 10, 2012

The assault on the 40-year-old Chesterfield, N.J. woman happened on Wright Drive last Wednesday evening. She had just parked her car in the garage and was headed to the mailbox when the suspect suddenly appeared asking if someone named Dave lived there.

"He came towards her, and her feeling threatened, she turned and screamed and was tackled by the male suspect and doesn't remember anything from that point," said Patrolman Edward Vincent of Chesterfield Police.

How the victim's jaw was broken is unclear, but the injury required surgery. The victim wasn't robbed and the motive for the attack is unclear.

"People are upset, scared," chiropractor Denise Evans told Action News.

Evans says the random attack has residents of the Chesterfield Green development on edge.

"Oh God, high alert. I think we all are," she said. "I'm a doctor in the community and patients are talking about it nonstop."

"I'm afraid now," said resident Kristin Costintini. "I have a new baby and I'm afraid walking in and out of my house."

Darnell Wise has warned his children about being safe.

"Make sure that they lock the doors now where before we kind of left them open," he said. "And making sure they're keeping an eye on their surroundings."

"I'm definitely on guard," said Sheri Sheridan. "I put curtains on my front doors, taking every precaution there is until they catch this guy."

Police have stepped up patrols and distributed copies of the composite sketch. Chesterfield Elementary School is just down the street from where the attack took place.

"I walk the kids to school, home from school, and I don't let them out by themselves alone anymore because of this," said Danielle Quinn.

"People are jumpy," said Deepak Lalchandani. "People are kind of scared, like this never happened before and there was no reason for this to happen."

Police are asking anyone with information about this attack or the man in the composite sketch to contact them immediately.
