Officer injured in crash, woman arrested for DUI

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - February 14, 2012

"It was a very loud crash, it was a lot of noise, you could hear it from two blocks back and you saw the debris and you were just hoping that no one was hurt," witness Alexander Brown of North Philadelphia said.

Around 9:00 p.m., Brown says he saw a black Dodge Stratus and a police cruiser violently collide near Lehigh Avenue and 22nd Street in North Philadelphia.

Investigators say the female officer was trapped in her car, but once an emergency crew got her out, she was transported to Temple University Hospital.

"The officer seemed very discombobulated; she seemed very out of it. The other lady seemed like she was more okay, but wasn't seriously hurt. She was able to walk up and stand," Brown said.

Officers say they smelled alcohol on the other driver's breath and gave her a field sobriety test.

They thought there was enough evidence to take 44-year-old woman to jail for a blood alcohol test.

A lieutenant on the scene told us the officer was responding to a burglary call with lights and sirens on.

Brown who gave a statement to investigators says while he did see the cop driving at a high rate of speed, he didn't see any lights or sirens.

"I believe there may be blame to go around everybody. I think human error was involved in both situations," Brown said.
