2 NJ cops accused of stealing police union funds

VINELAND, N.J. (AP) - February 18, 2012

Cumberland County prosecutors say Vineland Patrolmen Steven Buglio and William Newman face several charges, including theft and conspiracy counts. Both were suspended without pay following their arrests Friday.

Buglio had served as president of Police Benevolent Association Local 266, which represents police officers in Vineland and Buena (Atlantic County), before being removed Wednesday by state PBA officials. Newman had served as the local's treasurer.

Authorities have not provided specific details on how the alleged thefts occurred or how much money was involved. But complaints filed in the case state the two officers used the local's money "as if it was (their) own."

Buglio and Newman both declined comment on the charges
