Police: father shoots son during argument

MILLTOWN, Del. - April 12, 2012

New Castle County Detectives have warrants on file for Paul Sullivan, a 28-year-old male who resides in the 2600 block of Grendon Drive in the community of Heritage Park in Newark, Delaware.

He is being charged with felony assault, robbery and threatening to harm his family after a domestic incident that took place at the home.

After the incident, police say he fled the home only to return later that night in an attempt to harm another family member, before sustaining a gunshot wound to his upper body during a second altercation at the residence.

On Wednesday at 5:06 p.m., County Police and emergency personnel from the Cranston Heights Fire Company responded to the home for a physical domestic altercation.

When officers arrived, they located a 53-year-old female victim who had sustained a non-life-threatening head injury after being struck by an unknown object.

The victim was immediately transported by ambulance personnel to the Christiana Hospital to be treated for her injury.

The investigation revealed that as the female victim returned home she was confronted by her son, later identified as Paul Sullivan, and assaulted while they were in front of the residence.

Sullivan then grabbed the victim's keys and fled the area in an unknown direction.

Assisting officers and a police canine team responded and completed an extensive search of the area in an attempt to locate the son, but they were unsuccessful in their efforts in finding the subject.

While units were actively searching for the suspect, officers and paramedics responded back to the residence at 9:54 p.m., for a shooting that just occurred.

When officers arrived, they learned that Sullivan had returned to the home and a confrontation ensued between him and his father after he threw a brick through a front window. Moments later, the male shot his son as he was in the front yard of the home and Sullivan sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Sullivan was then transported to the Christiana Hospital by emergency personnel from the Millcreek Fire Company and is currently listed in stable condition after receiving treatment for his injury.

Currently, the case is being reviewed by the Attorney General's Office, and at this time no charges have been filed as a result of the shooting.
