Consumer: Breakfast sandwich, yard sales, insurance payouts

PHILADELPHIA - April 26, 2012

INSURANCE COMPANIES PAYING OUT

Check your mailbox. Some health insurance companies are going to issue rebates by August 1st. They'll average $127 to certain policyholders.

Last year, the Affordable Care Act started requiring insurers spend a certain percentage of the premium payments they get toward patient care instead of administrative and marketing costs.

Insurers who fail to meet that requirement must issue refunds to consumers.

THE BEST BREAKFAST SANDWICH

Consumer Reports graded the nutrition of 106 egg sandwiches sold by fast food restaurants and coffee or donut chains.

"As far as nutrition goes, just six out of the 106 sandwiches rated very good," said Consumer Reports' Erin Gudeux.

These included sandwiches at Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, and Subway.

To check out taste, Consumer Reports' trained taste testers went undercover to at least three different locations of each chain.

Consumer Reports says the winner for the tastiest, nutritious egg sandwich is Subway.

Its Egg White and Cheese on Flatbread is the only sandwich Consumer Reports rated very good for taste.

YARD AND GARAGE SALE WARNING

If you're planning a yard or garage sale this spring, be aware and take the proper precautions.

"Garage sales do pose a potential liability risk," said Jenny Robinson of the American Automobile Association (AAA).

So make sure you have homeowners or renters insurance. And if you have yard sales frequently, buy a separate policy for business liability or an in-home business policy.

Make sure you aren't selling items that have been recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. That could lead to fines and penalties.

And when you are setting up, be sure to allow enough space between items to prevent tripping or falls.

Don't put things too close to stairs and ledges where people could fall, and put sharp objects up high - out of reach of children.
