Sen. Nicholas Sacco's potential payout will drop from $331,970 to $143,560. The Democrat is paid $233,725 as assistant superintendent of the North Bergen school district and has served as the town's mayor for two decades.
The action comes after The Star-Ledger of Newark on Sunday reported on state lawmakers who had accrued large amounts of unused sick and vacation time. Sacco's payout topped the list of 15 lawmakers with other public jobs.
A 2007 law froze unused sick time.
The state Education Department told the newspaper it had inserted language in Sacco's contract that may have made it seem he was entitled to more money.
