Trial set to open in Pa. police officer's killing

EASTON, Pa. - May 7, 2012

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the murder trial of George Hitcho Jr. in Northampton County.

Hitcho shot and killed Freemansburg police Officer Robert Lasso last August when Lasso responded to a disturbance call. Investigators say Hitcho shot Lasso in the head while the officer was trying to fend off Hitcho's dogs.

Following the shooting, Hitcho claimed Lasso was trespassing. Prosecutors say Lasso was lawfully investigating a complaint.

Court documents show Hitcho's attorneys may pursue an insanity or diminished capacity defense.
