74th Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta ends

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - May 12, 2012

It is America's largest collegiate regatta, attracting crew teams from all over the country.

For the freshman team from William and Mary in Virginia, it was a thrill to be competing.

"A lot of people were talking about it all year long, and when we got here it lived to all of our expectations," said Elizabeth Castianos.

"It's amazing," said Narin Kim. "I've never done team sports before, so everything was all new, but I love everything about crew rowing."

For a Chester County couple, devotion to the Dad Vail goes back a half century to college days, and they love this spectacle more than ever.

"I was at Penn," said Roger Ross. "I've been coming for over 50 years."

"I've been coming for several years, but this is an absolutely gorgeous day, and the excitement here is as exciting as it has ever been," said Sheila Alexander.

For this 74th year of the regatta, the weather was beautiful and cooperating completely.

Within hours of the finish, planning will be underway for the 75th anniversary event.

For the Kennedy family of Melbourne Beach, Florida the trip is working out for them to watch their son row for Jacksonville University.

"It's pretty impressive; very impressive, and I love the weather here too, really very nice," said Todd Kennedy.

More than 3,500 student athletes from 118 colleges and universities are competed this weekend on the 2,000-meter course.

Temple University was among the teams cruising down the Schuylkill Saturday, finishing 8th in the Men's Varsity 8, with Drexel University coming in 3rd, and Michigan the winner.
