The Dog House, a grooming center in Audubon, New Jersey, offers a wide range of color for dogs and cats.
Owner Lisa-Marie Varsaci told Action News she remembers her grandmother coloring baby chicks at Easter when she was growing up.
She owns the grooming parlor, and got the idea that some pet owners might like to give their four-footed friends a splash of color.
Dyes are organic and safety-approved...come in blacks and browns that come close to an animal's natural coloring. But there's also a wide range of other colors, from silver, to shocking pink, lime green to red.
Pretty much any color you can imagine either exists right out of the jar or can be mixed. Dyes are translucent, so if applied to darker fur they become a "highlight". But on lighter fur, the color shines through.
The store's resident cat, "Fancy" , is pure white, and on our visit his ears and tail were colored purple. But a dog had a mix of fur colors and only his white portions were stenciled with stars.
Once the coloring agent dries, it's harmless to your pet. It fades away over a period of a month or two, or a special shampoo can wash it out. But your pet can't lick it off.
The shop has done many dogs and cats, but it's possible to color other animals. Everything is performed and attended by professionals.
The Dog House charges as little as five dollars for an application depending on the size of the animal and the area to be colored. They're open Tuesday through Sunday, and most pet care is by appointment.
