NJ woman indicted in dog-throwing traffic death

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - June 14, 2012

Twenty-five-year-old Haniyyah Barnes of Newark also faces charges of burglary, theft and criminal mischief.

Prosecutors said Wednesday that Barnes kicked in a neighbor's door and threatened and assaulted a person there. When the family's Shih Tzu ran into the room and barked at Barnes, she allegedly grabbed the dog by the throat, ran outside and threw it into traffic.

The dog - Honey Bey - was struck by a vehicle and killed. Prosecutors say a patrolman witnessed the incident.

Barnes couldn't be reached for comment. A telephone listed under her name was disconnected.

She is represented by the state public defender's office, which declined comment.
