Philly Pops kicks off its 34th season

PHILADELPHIA - September 30, 2012

The Pops have 6 concert series planned this season…celebrating everything from James Bond to the Beatles to Irving Berlin. Up first…. Dancing and Romancing….a tip of the top hat to the music of the 1930s.

Peter Nero, Artistic Dir. & Conductor of The Philly Pops said, "This tribute to the 30s features 2 singing dancers or 2 dancing singers, whichever way you want to put it, whoever gets top billing."

Its' the team of Joan Hess and Kirby Ward and they'll be swinging to the sounds of Irving Berlin and George Gershwin…..and paying tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The concert will feature Spanish guitarist Pablo Sainz Villegas (Sanes Vee egg us) and violinist Michael Ludwig, concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic. Ludwig will play Tango from the movie, Scent of a Woman.

"It should be sensational and Michael is unique, there's no doubt, wonderful soloist. He's got a wonderful sound, technique, and his attitude is he loves music and he loves to play for people. ," added Nero.

The Grammy Award winning Peter Nero has led the Pops since 1979. He was the founding music director and this is his final season.

"Oh it's definitely bittersweet. I will miss the musicians the most. I call it the best orchestra of its kind and it's important to put that in there-of it's kind….in the cosmos, and I will miss them because we've become a family over the years.," said Nero.
