Music school's marching band protests bus cuts

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - October 18, 2012

The Girard Academic Music Program's 102-member marching band and color guard performed in front of the School District of Philadelphia offices on Wednesday.

The students are protesting the school district's proposal to remove bus services.

The South Philadelphia school has a transportation dilemma because two-thirds of its middle-school students ride a school bus.

The magnet school for grades 5 through 12 was founded in 1974 by Jack Carr, now its principal. It has more than 500 students from all over the city and boasts the best attendance rate in the district.

Carr said his biggest fear is the safety of youngsters carrying expensive musical instruments on public transportation.
