Hatboro man killed baby in "drunken rage," DA says

HATBORO, Pa. - February 26, 2013

District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said 28-year-old Edward Doyle killed his baby, 2-month-old Makayla Doyle, in a "drunken rage," and "maliciously and recklessly" killed his daughter.

An autopsy, the DA said, found that the baby's nose was pinched, hampering her breathing.

Authorities accuse Doyle of trying to cover up the crime with lies.

Doyle is now charged with third-degree murder along with endangering the welfare of children.

Doyle, of an apartment in the 2500 block of Horsham Road, was being held on $1 million bail.

Police were called to his apartment at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, which Doyle shares with his wife, baby Makayla and a 15-month old baby.

Investigators say baby Makayla was found with bruising on her forehead and cuts on her nose.

Makayla was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to police, Doyle told investigators he was out celebrating a friend's birthday on Saturday night and drank six pints of beer.

Then, early Sunday morning, he and his friends came back for a card game. After the game broke up, he and his wife briefly went to a friend's apartment where they argued about taxes.

Doyle told police he came home alone and baby Makayla, who was in a swing, began to cry.

Then, Doyle allegedly told police, he picked up the child and was walking toward the kitchen when he hit the swing and fell, landing on top of the baby.

Police say Doyle claims to have checked to see if the baby was still breathing, then put her back in the swing.

He believes the baby took a binky around 7:15 a.m., but admitted to being "groggy."

At some point after that, Doyle told police he found Makayla unresponsive and called 911.

He allegedly told detective he should not have been caring for Makayla because he "drank too much."
