Twenty-four-year-old Joseph C. McAndrew Jr. is awaiting trial on charges of first- and third-degree murder in the March 2011 slayings. Authorities say he used a sword to stab 70-year-old Joseph C. McAndrew, 64-year-old Susan C. McAndrew, and his twin, James McAndrew.
Officials say the defendant's court-appointed guardian filed papers in Montgomery County Orphans Court on Monday requesting access to the funds in his mother's estate. He wants to use the money to retain counsel and expert forensic psychiatrists.
The guardian, Joseph J. Hylan, says Susan McAndrew's estate has a gross value of about $1 million.
Prosecutors call the filing "frivolous."
