Matt Cruz remains optimistic on the road to recovery

PHILADELPHIA - April 30, 2013

The road to recovery has been grueling and painful, but Matt believes he will one day rise to his feet unassisted.

"My ultimate goal is to be able to walk again. So to achieve that goal, you have to keep an open mind and be very optimistic," Matt said.

Matt's family and caretakers are amazed at just how optimistic he has remained.

His mother Megan says when things get tough, Matthew is often the one who encourages her to stay strong.

"I don't have the words for it. He's remarkable. He's a remarkable young man," Megan said.

The Neshaminy High School sophomore was recently transferred from his hospital in Boston to Magee Rehabilitation Center in Center City.

Meanwhile, construction teams are already working to make the Cruz family home wheelchair accessible. It is a necessity that's proving expensive and is not covered by insurance.

Several fundraisers have been scheduled to help the family, but Megan admits, those fundraisers will have to do very well if she is going to make ends meet.

"I honestly don't even want to think about. I'm taking one project at a time," Megan said.

Matt says he realizes the road ahead will be a tough.

But while he lost his ability to walk that has done nothing to stop him from his goal to one day be accepted to Harvard University and live a fulfilling life.

"It does get hard sometimes. Some days are worst than others, but overall, you just try to have a positive outlook," Matt said.

"I think he's a miracle in the making. I have a lot of hope that he's going to do well. I really do," Megan said.

Matt says his next goal is to go home, somewhere he hasn't been since the crash occurred in February.

The hope is he will be discharged and go back home to Levittown sometime before the start of summer.
