The incident happened shortly before 10:00 a.m. near the intersection of Landon and Van Kirk Streets.
The officers were attempting to stop a male who was wanted for a domestic assault, police say.
The suspect fled with two officers in pursuit. The officers then noticed the suspect hiding under a parked vehicle on the 6000 block of Oxford Avenue.
One officer pulled the suspect from under the vehicle and according to investigators, the suspect fought with police, and attempted to take the gun from the officer's holster.
Police used a Taser and a baton on the man, which had no effect.
Finally, police say, the man tried to get another officer's gun. That officer fired the gun, hitting the man in the chest.
The suspect was taken to Einstein Hospital in critical condition.
Officials say, the officer has been place on administrative duty while the incident is investigated.
