The incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. Wednesday on the 4700 block of Ridge Avenue, just east of School House Lane.
PECO says an outage occurred along the City Avenue corridor when a water department crew came into contact with the cable.
The injured water department employee, described as a man about 30 years old, was rushed by medics to Temple University Hospital in critical but stable condition.
PECO dispatched crews to the site of the incident.
The fault resulted in six customers losing service.
