Officer punched by man inside Spring Garden bar

SPRING GARDEN - February 1, 2014

It was around 1:15 a.m. when a police officer along with two State Troopers that were in the area were notified by a security guard that there was a male being held by security at the Union Transfer Bar, located at 1026 Spring Garden Street.

As the officer and the two Troopers approached the bar, security guards informed them that they were holding a man down on the ground and that one of the guards had been punched by the man several times.

Police say the officer and one of the Troopers attempted to grab the suspect, and that's when the man allegedly jumped up and punched the officer in the face with a closed fist.

The suspect was then wrestled to the ground and handcuffed.

The officer was transported to Hahnemann Hospital where he was treated for two small lacerations before being released.

The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Kevin M. Baker Jr. from 1600 North 61st Street, was charged with Assault on Police.

Police tell Action News that there were approximately 1,000 people inside of the club attending a concert at the time of the incident. They also say this club does not have a history of problems.
