Pedestrian killed after being struck by semi near Route 7 off-ramp on I-95 in Newport, Delaware

NEWPORT, Del. (WPVI) -- A pedestrian was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 in Delaware on Tuesday night.

It happened near the off-ramp from I-95 northbound to Route 7 in Newport around 9 p.m.

Police say a white Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling in the right northbound lane of I-95, north of Churchmans Road. At the same time, a 49-year-old man from Newark was crossing the northound lanes of the interstate as he attempted to get to the east side of the roadway from his disabled vehicle that was on the left shoulder.

The man entered the semi's path and was struck, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family and relatives are notified.

The driver of the semi, a 52-year-old man from Milford, Delaware, was not injured.

The northbound lanes were shut down for a roughly 2.5 hours during the investigation but have since been reopened.
