PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- State police have released the name of the man who died after he was hit by several vehicles along Interstate 95 in South Philadelphia.

Peter Sorochinski of Levittown, Bucks County, was struck in the southbound lanes near the Market St. on-ramp just before 9 p.m. Tuesday.

According to state police, Sorochinski had been involved in a single-vehicle crash and suffered a suspected head injury.

A passing driver stopped to help and called police.

That driver told police that Sorochinski made his own phone call, and when he got off the phone he suddenly stepped into the right southbound lane.

Sorochinski was struck by an unknown make and model silver sedan. The driver of that sedan fled the scene and police say they would like to talk to the driver.

Sorochinski was then hit by two additional vehicles. Those drivers stopped.

Sorochinski was pronounced dead at the scene.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed in the area for about seven hours.
