PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- One person has died and another person was injured in a house fire in Philadelphia's Kensington section early Monday morning.
The fire broke out around 6:40 a.m. in the 900 block of E. Schiller Street.
When crews arrived, they found a fire on the first floor of a row home and there were reports of people trapped inside.
Firefighters said they rescued a 71-year-old woman who had been able to get out to the roof. She was taken to Temple University Hospital for burns and smoke inhalation.
That woman's brother was found inside the home on the second floor, but he did not survive.
He has been identified as 62-year-old Gregory Graham. He was known as "Lucky."
Margaret Moody, another one of Graham's sisters, wasn't home at the time but arrived to the chaotic scene.
"He was trying to make it out but he couldn't get out," she said.
Moody spoke to her sister at the hospital.
"She told my brother to follow her out the window. He went back downstairs thinking that he could get out the front door. That's how he got caught up," she said.
Investigators say there were no smoke alarms in the home. This is a tragedy that fire officials believe could have been avoided.
"If you do not have a working smoke alarm in your home, I urge you to call 311 so the fire department can come out, inspect your home and get you the protection that you need," said Asst. Chief Charles Walker.
Fire officials say the fire began on the first floor. They are still investigating what started the flames.
