The attacked happened 7:45 p.m. in South Philadelphia, in the rear of a house on the 400 block of Mercy Street.
The boy was apparently in a friend's yard when the dog got out of a home and bit the boy in the face.
South detectives say the dog is apparently a mixed breed, perhaps a cross between a pit bull and boxer. Police have not said if the dog's owner faces any charges.
