City of Newark marks 250th Birthday

The city of Newark is planning a big weekend celebration to commemorate it's 250th Birthday. Today, residents were invited to bring items they want to include in a time capsule which will be planted in a ceremony on Sunday at 11:00a.m., on the Academy Building lawn, at 105 E. Main St. The time capsule was closed up at noon today and taken to a local funeral home to be sealed according to Mayor Vance Funk. The weekend's celebration starts this afternoon at 6:15 p.m. with a 5k walk/run, starting at the Academy Building on Main St. Registration is $20. and begins at 5:15 p.m.

A Heritage Parade, featuring the University of Delaware Marching Band, Newark High School Band and others, is scheduled for Saturday at 3:00, beginning on Delaware Avenue and continuing down Main Street. That will be followed by a city wide toast, with "250th Anniversary Ale," made by Twin Lakes Brewing Co., at various restaurants named as toasting sites.

Sunday's activities include the time capsule being planted at 11:00. There will be a Colonial Market and Petting Zoo on the Academy Building Lawn from 11:00-3:00p.m., the reading of the 250th Anniversary Proclamation at noon on the Academy Building lawn and an already sold out 250th Anniversary Banquet at 5:00p.m. at the University of Delaware's Clayton Hall.
