State police say a former employee has been charged in the armed robbery of a pet store near Newark. It happened around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Corcord Pet Store in the 1400 block of Capitol Trail.

Police say 25-year-old John Stephenson of Elsmere was carrying a handgun and demanded money from two employees. They gave him cash and he fled.

Stephenson was arrested at Delaware Park.

While in a holding cell, police say, Stephenson smashed a glass door.

He was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and one of criminal mischief. He was committed to Young Correctional Institution on $30,500 bail.
