A man who briefly served as a firefighter in Lackawanna County is charged with starting fires at several small businesses. Authorities say 25-year-old Benjamin Christensen of Carbondale acted out of anger or boredom in setting five fires over the last 15 months.

The Greenfield Township Volunteer Fire Company says Christensen served as a probationary firefighter for a month last fall before he was released.

He is being held on $500,000 bail. It was not clear if he has a lawyer.

Police say Christensen talked about the fires while being questioned this month in a statutory rape case. He is also charged with the statutory sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl.
