A doctor says at least eight people suffocated during a soccer match at an overcrowded stadium in Liberia's capital.

The Liberian Football Association's chief doctor, Sam Harris, says the victims' bodies were taken to the country's main hospital.

The eight people had been in the stands watching Liberia and Gambia play a qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup. The 33,000-seat Samuel K. Doe stadium in Monrovia was packed beyond capacity for the match on Sunday.

No other details were immediately available.
