The corpses of dead animals packed in freezers have reportedly been found in a closed Jersey City animal shelter.

A workman said that he discovered the carcasses of dead dogs in bags while doing work inside the shuttered facility. It was not immediately clear how many were found.

A spokeswoman for Jersey City tells the television station the city has ongoing litigation against the shelter, which was closed months ago following numerous violations.

The shelter reportedly operated as a Hudson County District facility of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
