The Delaware Humane Association has taken possession of 45 cats from a home near New Castle deemed unfit for human habitation because of sanitation issues.

Officials say the animals are in good condition, with only minor health problems, and owner Crystal Thomas will not face cruelty charges. At least five of the cats are pregnant.

Thomas says her home in Oakmont was inspected and condemned after a social worker's recent visit to investigate an unrelated complaint about a family issue. Thomas, her son and her nephew are staying with relatives.

Thomas says she had just six cats last year but could not afford to have them sterilized.

She says she is cleaning the house and hopes to have it reinspected within days.
