The Pennsylvania Convention Center's expansion is almost $100 million over its original $700 million budget. And officials say skyrocketing prices for building materials could push the project's cost even higher.

Gov. Ed Rendell says it's "getting to the point where the cost will outweigh the benefit." But he says that's not quite the case yet.

Convention Center officials say the project, which is supposed to finished in 2011, is about $90 million over budget. They say the amount will become clearer in mid-August, when bids are due for the next phase of construction.

The state is expanding the facility in downtown Philadelphia to attract more conventions and trade shows, which will pump money into the city's economy.
