250 Chrysler workers to be fired starting Friday

NEW YORK (AP) - September 25, 2008 Chrysler said in a statement Thursday night that most of the affected employees will learn their fate Friday.

The company has been offering buyouts and early retirement packages to employees to get them to leave voluntarily but says it has reached only three-quarters of its goal.

The cuts come as Chrysler continues to struggle amid the nationwide slump in auto sales. Its sales fell 24 percent in the first eight months of this year as consumers shun its lineup dominated by trucks and sport utility vehicles.
