11 people hurt in Del. bus crash

DELAWARE CITY, Del. - August 21, 2009 It happened around 7:10 a.m. at Route 9 and Hamburg Road in Delaware City.

Police say a Colonial School District bus, heading to Gunning Bedford Middle School, was traveling southbound on Route 9 as a pickup truck was travelling on Hamburg Road.

According to investigators the pickup truck, driven by Jose Guzman-Diaz, 46, of Newark, Delaware, pulled out onto Route 9 and into the path of the bus.

The two vehicles collided and the bus left the road and smashed into a guardrail before coming to a stop.

10 students and the driver of the pickup truck were hurt. All of those injured were taken to Christiana Hospital, where they were treated and released.

35 students were on board the bus. Those who were not hurt either went to school on another bus or were picked up by their parents.

Guzman-Diaz was cited with failure to remain stopped at a stop sign.

The roadway was shut down for approximately three hours.
