2 Del. police officers shot; 1 dies

Two suspects in custody; 1 on the loose
GEORGETOWN, Del. - September 2, 2009 Spokesman Cpl. Bruce Harris says Patrolman Chad Spicer died of the wounds he received Tuesday. Cpl. Shawn Brittingham, who was also shot, is in guarded but stable condition at Beebe Medical Center.

The officers responded to a report of shots fired at a fast-foot restaurant and chased a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle until the suspects got out and fled on foot.

Police say Spicer was shot before he could get out of the cruiser and Brittingham received a nonlethal injury to the neck as he got out.

Delaware State Police have charged Derrick J. Powell, 22, of Cumberland, Maryland with Murder 1st degree, Burglary 2nd degree, Reckless Endangering 1st degree, and Resisting Arrest. powell's burglary charge comes after he entered a home on Savannah Road in an attempt to evade police.

An arrest warrant has been issued for 20-year-old Christopher L. Reeves of Lincoln, Delaware, who remains on the loose. Reeves is the driver of the Chrysler Sebring involved in the investigation and should be considered armed and dangerous.

A 2nd suspect apprehended during this investigation has not been charged. Polcie say a preliminary investigation suggests he was not directly involved with the killing of Ptlm. Spicer. However, the investigation is ongoing.
