Police make huge marijuana mistake

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) - September 4, 2009

Police proudly announced earlier this week that they'd found more than 47,000 cannabis plants, with an estimated street value of nearly $6.5 million.

After officers had half the field mowed down, they learned the plants were part of an officially sanctioned university research project.

Scientists at the school (Wageningen University) say they were growing a new strain of hemp. The researchers say their hemp is related to the marijuana plant, but with only trace amounts of THC, the chemical that gives pot its high.

The school says the hemp field was part of a project to develop a sustainable source of fiber.
