A Macho man to fill Dawkins' spot

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - September 10, 2009 As soon as that happened, the question arose: Who will fill it?

I don't think anyone imagined it would be a rookie, a fifth round draft choice, who played cornerback in college, but Macho Harris did.

"I pictured it in my mind, of course. You always want to think big and dream big. Big things happen," Harris said.

It's hard enough to adjust to the perils of the NFL as a first year player, but to replace a 7-time Pro Bowler is something else entirely. Yet Macho won the job with his smarts and his ability to live up to his name.

"Macho, you talk about a guy who battled through all of the spring, all of the training camp, and showed a tremendous amount of perseverance and then on the field, he's a natural football player," Eagles defense coordinator Sean McDermott said.

Macho says he's fully aware that he's stepping in for a future hall of famer. In fact, he's been studying tape of Brian Dawkins and how he used to play for the Eagles.

"He did great things here. Why not follow the footsteps of a player that did great things here?" Harris said.

What he didn't know until Action News was interviewing him was that he was literally standing in Dawkins' place - at his locker.

"Oh, this was his locker? I didn't know that. I definitely have some shoes to fill then," Harris laughed, adding, "Other than that, I'm just having fun."
